Directgov Vehicle Tax Disc Renewal service is available online. You can pay for your car tax online if you are the vehicle’s registered keeper. You can renew your tax any day from the 5th day of the month it’s about to expire.

There are some requirement to renew vehicle tax disc online. Such as you are the registered keeper of the vehicle and your name, address and vehicle details are up-to-date with Drivers and Vehicle License Agency, have your V11 reminder letter (V85/1 for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs)) or V5C registration certificate,  have valid insurance,  have an MOT, Goods Vehicle or Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) test (if needed) – this must be valid when the tax disc starts, have a debit or credit card and more.

To renew your vehicle tax disc first you input the 16 digit reference number shown on your renewal reminder, or the 11 digit reference number from your Registration Document/Certificate (also known as the Logbook) and your vehicle registration mark (numberplate) and then choose the tax disc you want.

For a new tax disc you need to have an electronic MOT Test Certificate/GVT Certificate or entitlement to disability exemption. For the existing taxt disc, you will need to choose the tax disc you want, 6 or 12 months, and then enter your payment card details. An additional charge of £2.50 will be added to the amount payable if you use a credit card. And no charge if you use a debit card.

After you paid your Vehicle Tax Disc Renewal online, you will receive the new tax disc in the post within 5 working days.

Please note that if you’re taxing a particular vehicle in the disabled tax class for the first time you can’t do this online or by phone. You can only do this at a Post Office branch that issues tax discs.
