Directgov Driving License Renewal Service

Is your 70th birthday coming soon? Or is your Dad going into his 70s. Then you may need to renew your driving license or that of your dads.  Directgov motoring renewal service for age 70 or over is provided online. You can renew your driving license online for free if you’re 70 or over (or soon will be). Apply for your Government Gateway ID. If you don’t have one or need to re-register, you’ll get an ID as part of your application.

There are several requirements to renew the driving license online, such as having a British license that has expired or is going to expire within 90 days, being a resident of Great Britain, able to meet the minimum eyesight requirement, currently not prevented from driving for any reason and even more.

To apply for the renewal online, you need the following things at hand:

  • Your driving license
  • Your UK passport if you have one
  • Your National Insurance number if you have one
  • Details of previous addresses

You can apply by post with the D46P application form, which will be sent to you automatically 90 days before your 70th birthday. If you haven’t got the D46P form, use the D1 application for a driving license form. You will find the download link of this form at the bottom of the webpage. You can also pick one up from a Post Office. You must renew your C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlements by post or at a Post Office.

In case of having changed your name,  you will not be able to apply online. To apply for changing your name on your driving license, you can use the reminder sent to you if it is in your possession. If not, you will have to apply by post using a D1 application form. DVLA will send you your driving license within three weeks upon you submitting your application.  If you want to renew your C1 (medium size vehicles) driving entitlement or D1 (minibus) driving entitlement or the photo on your license, You are not able to use the license renew service online.

As long as following the specific conditions attached to your license and  sending it in a valid application, you can continue driving until receiving your new license.

View the top questions or browse the questions by topic to see if them are helpful to solve your problems. They have answers to the most common questions about GOV.UK.
  2. If you are still with problems unsolved, contact them directly. At the moment, you can only ask question online. You can send them messages from the site.  If you’d like to get a replay to your questions, you can leave your name and email address.
  3. If, still, you can’t solve your problem, call the Driver Licensing Enquiries at 0300-790-6801 or 0300-123-1278.

    I have completed the form for renewing my over 70 driving licence. IT was accepted but when i tried to print off page telling me what to do with old licence etc. my compujter went wrong and i could not print and the page had disappeared. Can you please email me copy of that page of confirmation so i can proceed. Thanks.
